Qualitative research in digital environments : a research
toolkit / Alessandro Caliandro and Alessandro Gandini.--
New York: Routledge, 2017.
xi, 228p. , 24cm.
ISBN : 9781138188686.

This book offers a toolkit of methods and technologies to
undertake qualitative research on digital spaces. This
"Digital Ethnography" is unlike commonly used traditional
methodological strategies, which are "retrofitted" to
digital spaces. Instead, this book offers researchers a
set of "digitally native" tools that are designed for
virtual communities. Thanks to a broad range of cases
including Louis Vuitton, YouTube and the concept of
hipsterism, this text illustrates the practical
applications of techniques and tools over the most
popular social media environments.

Beyond Bourdieu : from genetic structuralism to
relational phenomenology / Will Atkinson.-- Cambridge:
Polity Press, 2016.
175p. , 22cm.
ISBN : 9781509507481.

Pierre Bourdieu is arguably the most influential
sociologist of the twentieth century, especially since
the once common criticisms of his determinism and
reproductionism have receded. Now, however, his
intellectual enterprise faces a new set of challenges
unearthed by decades of sympathetic research: how to
conceive the relationship between society and place,
particularly in an increasingly global world, how to
recognize the individual as a product of multiple forces
and pressures, how to make sense of family relations and
gender domination, and, ultimately, how to grasp how we
each come to be the unique beings we are. This book
tackles these challenges head on, starting from the
philosophical core of Bourdieu’ s sociology and taking in
hints and suggestions across his corpus, to propose a
range of novel concepts and arguments. In the process it
outlines a new way of looking at the world to complement
Bourdieu’s own one in which the focus is on
the multiple social structures shaping individuals’
everyday lives, not the multiple individuals comprising a
single social structure.

The Tebhaga movement is probably the greatest peasant
movement in the history of India. The Tebhaga movement
was a movement of the sharecroppers of Bengal demanding
two-thirds instead of half as their produce. Basically
from this principle demand the name -Tebhaga- movement
come. The small peasants also joined hand with the
sharecroppers as the gambit of the demands increased.
Gradually with the intensification of the movement the
charter of demands even touched the revolutionary idea
of- land to tiller- concept.

In this book, the authors examine one particularly
striking group who have taken part in this development:
Tamil Brahmans - a formerly traditional, rural, high-
caste elite who have transformed themselves into a new
middle-class caste in India, the United States, and
elsewhere. They offer one of the most comprehensive looks
at Tamil Brahmans around the world to date. They examine
Brahman migration from rural to urban areas, more recent
transnational migration, and how the Brahman way of life
has translated to both Indian cities and American
suburbs. They look at modern education and the new
employment opportunities afforded by engineering and IT.
They examine how Sanskritic Hinduism and traditional
music and dance have shaped Tamil Brahmans- particular
middle-class sensibilities and how middle-class status is
related to the changing position of women.

In recent years, debate on the state-s economic role has
too often devolved into diatribes against intervention.
Peter Evans questions such simplistic views, offering a
new vision of why state involvement works in some cases
and produces disasters in others. To illustrate, he looks
at how state agencies, local entrepreneurs, and
transnational corporations shaped the emergence of
computer industries in Brazil, India,.

The Indian manufacturing sector has undergone
comprehensive reforms since 1991. In spite of rapid rates
of economic growth since the reforms, the informal sector
has been a persistent phenomenon in India, leading to
significant policy concerns on the lack of inclusivity of
economic growth. This book assesses how informal
manufacturing firms have responded to the context of
economic liberalization in India, and provides policy
recommendations on how to make India-s economic growth
more inclusive of the informal sector.

The study undertakes a comparative analysis of the state
as an economic actor in developing countries. Why have
some developing country states been more successful at
facilitating industrialization than others? An answer to
this question is developed by focusing both on patterns
of state construction and patterns of state intervention
aimed at promoting industrialization. Four countries are
analyzed in detail - South Korea, Brazil, India, and
Nigeria - over the twentieth century. The states in these
countries varied from cohesive-capitalist (mainly in
Korea), through fragmented-multiclass (mainly in India),
to neo-patrimonial (mainly in Nigeria). It is argued that
cohesive-capitalist states have been most effective at
promoting industrialization and neo-patrimonial states
the least. The performance of fragmented-multiclass
states falls somewhere in the middle.

Rai sheds light on the major scams that shook the
country. Among the case studies-chosen for the diversity
of failures they highlight are - the procedural
irregularities in the issuance of licenses for second
generation spectrum allotment, the last minute quick-
fixes in the conduct of the XIX commonwealth games, the
loss of national resources while allocating coal blocks,
the flouting of systems and the clear display of crony
capitalism in the exploration of hydrocarbon and the
tragic tale of civil aviation in India. Through these
illustrations, Rai wishes to not only expose government
malfeasance, but also probe the mandate of the CAG as a
watchdog. Equally, he hopes to push for long-term
solutions to corruption and bring home the urgent need
for ethics-for the pursuit of excellence, accountability,
probity and transparency within governments, the
bureaucracy, corporate enterprises .

Few places have been as influential as the Indian
subcontinent in shaping the course of life on Earth. Yet
its evolution has remained largely unchronicled. this
book fills this gap. From the oldest rocks, formed three
billion years ago in Karnataka, to the arrival of our
ancestors 50,000 years ago on the banks of the Indus, the
author meticulously sifts through wide-ranging scientific
disciplines and through the layers of earth to tell us
the story of India, filled with a variety of fierce
reptiles, fantastic dinosaurs, gargantuan mammals and
amazing plants. It shows us how every piece of rock and
inch of soil is a virtual museum, and how, over billions
of years, millions of spectacular creatures have
reproduced, walked and lived over and under it.
Researching across wide-ranging scientific
disciplines and travelling with scientists all over the
country, biochemist Pranay Lal has woven together the
first compelling narrative of India’s deep natural
history, filled with fierce reptiles, fantastic
dinosaurs, gargantuan mammals and amazing plants. This
story, which includes a rare collection of images,
illustrations and maps, starts at the very beginning from
the time when a galactic swirl of dust coalesced to
become our life-giving planet and ends with the arrival
of our ancestors on the banks of the Indus. Pranay Lal
tells this story with verve, lucidity and an infectious
enthusiasm that comes from his deep, abiding love of
nature.

of managing their people well, probably because formal
education in HR does not prepare the young, would-be HR
manager to face and deal with the reality at the
workplace. This book has been written for this very
purpose. It gives the reader a clear idea of the
strategic role that HR plays in attaining the business
goals of the organization.

This volume problematizes different facets of management
education in India--pedagogy, curricula, and disciplinary
and institutional practices--from the perspective of the
Global South. The essays in this volume bring out the
institutional challenges of crafting a relevant academic
programme that converses with both national specificities
and global realities. Coming from diverse academic
specializations, the contributors traverse the interface
of their respective disciplines with management
education. In doing so, they engage with the ongoing
global debate on management education. This volume fills
a noticeable gap of serious, scholarly reflection on the
state of management education. While there have been
sporadic reflections and occasional critiques, a critical
stocktaking of the institutional and disciplinary aspects
of management education has been long wanting.
