This book explains how to combine two widely known
statistical methods-statistical design and statistical

In South Asia, as elsewhere, the category of -the public-
has come under increased scholarly and popular scrutiny
in recent years. This book surveys the modern Indian
-public- across multiple historical contexts and sites,
with contributions from leading scholars of South Asia in
anthropology, history, literary studies and religious
studies. It highlights the complex genealogies of the
public in the Indian subcontinent during the colonial and
postcolonial eras, showing in particular how British
notions of -the public- intersected with South Asian
forms of publicity. The book suggests, more in the mode of
genealogy, that the category of the public has been
closely linked to the sub-continental history of
political liberalism.

This book is an ethnography of the Indian state and its
policy of legislated entry of women into political life.
It argues that political participation of women is
necessary to change the political practices in society,
to make institutions more gender, class and caste
representative, and to empower individual women to
negotiate both formal and informal institutions. Its
locus is the everyday life contexts of EWRs in the
southern Indian state of Karnataka who negotiate their
own meanings of politics, state, society, empowerment and
political subjectivity. Analysing three factors-
structural boundaries, sociocultural divisions and
conjunctural limitations imposed on the participation of
EWRs by political parties-the book demonstrates that the
social embeddedness of PRIs within everyday practices and
social relations of identity and power severely constrain
and shape the political participation and empowerment
of EWRs.

Evolution of economic ideas Adam Smith to Amartya Sen and

Press, 2017.
xi, 182p. , 23cm.
ISBN : 9780199466832.
330 BHA 144789
This book deals with different thinkers and theories to
explore ideas that later became the foundation of modern
economics. Through the lives and social circumstances of
eminent economists from Adam Smith through Marx, Keynes
and many others to Amartya Sen and beyond, it establishes
that each one was a keen observer of the social
conditions of his time. The book adopts a unique approach
of not only bringing together the thoughts of such
thinkers but also highlighting how they were often
vehemently different from one another. Through a
narrative inspired by a kind of Socratic dialogue based
on the author’s classroom interactions with his students,
it discusses the evolution of economic ideas, ending with
a look at modern economics in the context of the great
recession.

Deliberating environment policy in India : participation
and the role of advocacy / Sunayana Ganguly.-- London:

x, 186p. , 24cm.
ISBN : 9781138819436.

This book explores the transformations that have taken
place in the making of environmental policy in India
since the economic liberalization of the 1990s. It
investigates if there has been a slow shift from top-down
planning to increasingly bottom up and participatory
policy processes, examining the successes and failures of
recent environmental policies. Linking deliberation to
collective action, this book contends that it is crucial
to involve local actors in framing the policies that
decide on their rights and control over bio-resources in
order to achieve the goal of sustainable human
development.
