 330   ECONOMICS

4 Thaler, Richard H
Misbehaving : how economics became behavioural / Richard
H Thaler.-- United Kingdom: Penguin Books, 2015.
xiv,415p. , 24cm.
ISBN : 9781846144035.

Traditional economics assumes that rational forces shape
everything. Behavioural economics knows better. Richard
Thaler has spent his career studying the notion that
humans are central to the economy - and that we-re error-
prone individuals, not Spock-like automatons. Now
behavioural economics is hugely influential, changing the
way we think not just about money, but about ourselves,
our world and all kinds of everyday decisions. Whether
buying an alarm clock, selling football tickets, or
applying for a mortgage, we all succumb to biases and
make decisions that deviate from the standards of
rationality assumed by economists. In other words, we
misbehave. Dismissed at first by economists as an amusing
sideshow, the study of human miscalculations and their
effects on markets now drives efforts to make better
decisions in our lives, our businesses, and our
governments.

5 Basu, Kaushik
An Economist in the real world : the art of policymaking
in India / Kaushik Basu.-- Cambridge: The MIT Press, 2015

In December 2009, the economist Kaushik Basu left the
rarefied world of academic research for the nuts and
bolts of policymaking. Appointed by the then Prime
Minister of India, Manmohan Singh, to be chief economic
adviser (CEA) to the Government of India, Basu -- a
theorist, with special interest in development economics,
and a professor of economics at Cornell University --
discovered the complexity of applying economic models to
the real world. Effective policymaking, Basu learned,
integrates technical knowledge with political awareness.
In this book, Basu describes the art of economic
policymaking, viewed through the lens of his two and a
half years as CEA. Basu writes from a unique perspective -
neither that of the career bureaucrat nor that of the
traditional researcher.

This study looks at the rich literature that has been spawned
through the historical imagination of Bengali-speaking writers
in West Bengal and Bangladesh through issues of homelessness,
migration and exile to see how the Partition of Bengal in 1947
has thrown a long shadow over memories and cultural practices.
Through a rich trove of literary and other materials, the book
lays bare how the Partition has been remembered or how it has been
forgotten. For the first time, hitherto untranslated archival
materials and texts in Bangla have been put together to assess
the impact of 1947 on the cultural memory of Bangla-speaking peoples
and communities. This study contends that there is not one but many
smaller partitions that women and men suffered, each with its own
textures of pain, guilt and affirmation..
