Williams.-- London: Routledge, 2015.
xx, 308p. , 20cm.
ISBN : 9781138019188.

Descartes has often been called the -father of modern
philosophy-. His attempts to find foundations for
knowledge, and to reconcile the existence of the soul
with the emerging science of his time, are among the most
influential and widely studied in the history of
philosophy. This is a classic and challenging
introduction to Descartes by one of the most
distinguished modern philosophers. The author not only
analyzes Descartes- project of founding knowledge on
certainty, but uncovers the philosophical motives for his
search. With acute insight, he demonstrates how
Descartes- Meditations are not merely a description but
the very enactment of philosophical thought and
discovery. The author covers all of the key areas of
Descartes- thought, including God, the will, the
possibility of knowledge, and the mind and its place in
nature.

Modernity has spread across the globe in a relatively
unproblematic manner. There is hardly any society which
has remained immune to the influence of modernity, and
the degree to which it has impacted different societies
is quite profound. Modernity has come in contact with
different socio-economic and political realities
prevalent in different societies, such as that of
ethnicity and ethnic consciousness. Both Marxists and
liberals have argued that ethnic consciousness would
decline in the context of growth of capitalism and the
deepening of the process of modernization. But, this
argument seems misplaced in the face of spectacular
manifestations of ethnicity in the contemporary
world. This book examines concrete empirical situations
within India and, in the process, interrogates the
various theoretical formulations which are currently
available.

This is a book about the role of knowledge in social and
economic development. There is a need to address the
process of developing knowledge as a social process and
The New Natural Resource starts with the argument that
knowledge is inherently a social phenomenon. This allows
us to discuss the relation between individual opinions
and what is regarded as knowledge. It also allows us to
see how economic and political and democratic processes
are interrelated. .

Griffin on human rights / Roger Crisp.-- Oxford: Oxford
University Press, 2014.
xiv, 237p. , 22cm.
ISBN : 9780199668731.
323.01 GRI 143096
In his book, On Human Rights, and in other work, Griffin
has defended the view that contemporary judicial
understandings of human rights rest on an insecure
theoretical basis. This has had the result that the
language of human rights has been over-extended, and
consequently has less force where it really matters. On
Griffin-s view, human rights are best understood as
protections of our agency and personhood, and he argues
his case with reference to many real-life human rights
cases. Griffin-s book has led to a great deal of
discussion, and this book collects several of the most
significant responses to Griffin by internationally
leading moral and political philosophers. It also
includes a response by Griffin himself.

This book analyses the novels of Salman Rushdie and their
stylistic conventions in the context of Indian popular
cinema and its role in the elaboration of the author-s
arguments about post-independence postcolonial India.
Focusing on different genres of Indian popular cinema, the
author examines how Rushdie-s writing foregrounds the
epic, the mythic, the tragic and the comic, linking them
in storylines narrated in cinematic parameters. The book
shows that Indian popular cinema-s syncretism becomes an
aesthetic marker in Rushdie-s fiction that allows him to
elaborate on the multiplicity of Indian identity, both on
the subcontinent and abroad, and illustrates how Rushdie
uses Indian popular cinema in his narratives to express
an aesthetics of hybridity and a particular
conceptualization of culture with which -India- has
become identified in a global context.

Sanskrit poetry, and the no less transformative period at

Sanskrit to early modern Hindi, and beyond the
subcontinent and the Himalayas to Java and Tibet, where
kavya found a new home and continued to evolve.

This book is an edited and annotated translation of
Tarikh i-Yusufi by Yusuf Khan Kambalposh (c. 1830-90) who
travelled to several places in north Africa and Europe.
Translated for the first time from Urdu to English, it
describes in detail the socio-economic conditions of
Europe and contrasts it with the conditions in areas
under European control. By highlighting this duality of
approach with respect to the colonies, this translation
reverses the gaze and exposes the reader to a non-
European perception of the imperial world.

In 1811, Maria Nugent left her four young children behind
in England to accompany her husband, General George
Nugent, on his posting as commander-in-chief in India.
After a dizzying six months at the head of Calcutta
society, the couple embarked on a 14-month tour of the
British military stations in northern India, a journey
that took them to the very edge of the imperial frontier.
An account of Lady and General Nugent-s remarkable
journey across colonial India, this critical edition
contextualizes Lady Nugent-s East India Journal in the
history of India and the British Empire and the tradition
of travel writing. It offers a window into the rarely
glimpsed intimate social and domestic worlds of colonial
households in British India and also connects and
compares Lady Nugent-s time in India with her earlier
voyage to Jamaica recorded in her West India journal.

People-s mission to the Ottoman empire : M A Ansari and

During the Balkan Wars of 1912-13, concerned Muslims
around India mobilized to dispatch three medical teams to
treat wounded Ottoman soldiers. Among them, the one
organized by Mohammad Ali Jauhar and directed by Mukhtar
Ahmad Ansari caught the limelight, thanks to the regular
letters sent home by the director of the Mission and
published in the weekly Comrade journal. In the body of
scholarship on Ottoman pan-Islamism, as a manifestation
of pan-Islamist political ideology and Muslim
internationalist action and its influence on the 1919
Khilafat Movement in India, the 1912-13 Indian Medical
Mission has not been analysed in detail. This book studies
the letters by the director of the Mission and the
political and ideational context of the period to provide
the first full narrative history of the Medical Mission,
detailing its simultaneously humanitarian and political
purposes and activities in Turkey.
