xiv, 310p. , 21cm.

The author creates a portrait of a community of hijras in
Hyderabad that suggests that one cannot see hijras simply
through the lens of gender and sexual difference because
that is not how hijras understand themselves. Tracing
their presence from an era of Hyderabadi royal patronage
to the shifting social and cultural landscapes of
modernity and nationalism and finally to contemporary neo
liberalism, she shows the ever-changing, complicated and
multi-faceted matrix of class, caste, religion, and
regional identities and practices that underlie hijra
understandings of both their identity and their
difference.

xxvii, 162p. , 22cm.
ISBN : 9780415445788.
325.54 IQB 141810
This book analyses Iqbal-s Islamism through his poetry.
It argues that his notion of an Islamist selfhood was
expressed in his verse through the interplay between
poetic tradition and creative innovation. It also
considers how Iqbal expressed an Islamist geopolitical
imagination in his work, and examines his exploration of
the relationship between the modern West and a
reconstructed Islam. Iqbal-s personal letters have been
drawn upon to provide an insight into his inner conflicts
as articulated in his poetry. Concentrating on the
complexity of his work in its own right, the book eschews
the standard appropriation of Iqbal into any one
political agenda - be it Indian nationalism, Muslim
separatism or Iranian Islamic republicanism. With its
analytical and in-depth reading of Iqbal-s verse and
prose, this book opens a fresh perspective on Islam and
postcolonialism.

The essays in this book look at the interaction between
English and other Indian languages and focus on the
pressure of languages on writers and on each other.
Divided into two parts, the first part of the book deals
with the pressure that English language has exerted, and
continues to exert, in India and our ideas of
connectedness as a nation in the ways in which we deal
with this pressure. The second part of the book focuses
on Indian English literature and deals with how it
interacts with the idea of representing the Indian
nation, sometimes obsessively, seen both in poetry and
novels. The book argues that the writer-s location is
crucial to the world of imagination, whether in the
novel, poetry or drama.

Tamas tells the story of a sweeper named Nathu who is
bribed and deceived by a local Muslim politician to kill
a pig, ostensibly for a veterinarian. The following
morning, the carcass is discovered on the steps of the
mosque and the town, already tension-ridden, erupts.
Enraged Muslims massacre scores of Hindus and Sikhs, who,
in turn, kill every Muslim they can find. Finally, the
area°s British administrators call out the army to
prevent further violence. The killings stop but nothing
can not erase the awful memories from the minds of the
survivors, nor will the various communities ever trust
one another again. The events described in Tamas are
based on true accounts of the riots of 1947 that Sahni
was a witness to in Rawalpindi, and this new and
sensitive translation by the author himself resurrects
chilling memories of the consequences of communalism.

This book critically examines how concepts of
individualism functioned to support and resist British
imperialism in India. Paying particular attention to the
construction of gender, she shows that ideas of
individualism rhetorically and theoretically bind
colonials, feminists, nationalists, and neocolonials to
one another. She demonstrates how reliance on ideas of
the individual -as scapegoat or hero- enabled colonial
and neocolonial powers to deny the violence that they
perpetrated. she also shows how analyses of the role of
the individual provide a window into the dynamics and
limitations of state formations and feminist and
nationalist resistance movements.

This book traces the contours of the Tanjore
enlightenment, which produced a knowledge that was at
once modern and deeply rooted in the indigenous
tradition. The chief protagonist of this first ever full-
length study on Tanjore at the turn of the nineteenth
century is Raja Serfoji II (r. 1798-1832) in whose world
science and God coexisted comfortably.
