xxiii, 156p. 23cm.
(Current issues in developmental psychology).
ISBN : 9781848721432.

Taking a socio-cognitive approach, and integrating both
theoretical and applied perspectives, the book looks at a
range of contexts in which gender affects development and
socialisation, from the child’s place in the family unit
and their interaction with parents and siblings, to the
influence of communication with peers over the internet.
Throughout the chapters an age-old issue is addressed
through a contemporary, empirically focused perspective è
namely the nature and extent of equality between the
genders, and how difficult it is for attitudes,
perceptions and stereotypes to change. Key social issues
are covered, including pro-social behaviour, career
choice and academic competencies. .

For Weber is recognized widely as one of the most
incisive and stimulating books on Weber in the post-war
period. Writing in defense of Weber-s sociology against
the criticism of academic sociology by Marxists such as
Louis Althusser, Bryan Turner, a leading Weberian
scholar, rejects the view that Weber-s sociology is
bourgeois, subjectivist and individualistic. The book also
provides a survey of the strengths and weaknesses of the
major sociological approaches in the post-war period.

The Assumptions economists make / Jonathan Schlefer.--
Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2012.
xv, 356p.21cm.
ISBN : 9780674052260.
330 SCH 140539
While economists cloak their views in the aura of
science, what they actually do is make assumptions about
the world, use those assumptions to build imaginary
economies (known as models), and from those models
generate conclusions. Their models can be useful or
dangerous, and it is surprisingly difficult to tell which
is which. Schlefer takes up current controversies such as
income inequality and the financial crisis, for which he
holds economists in large part accountable. Although
theorists won international acclaim for creating models
that demonstrated the inherent instability of markets,
ostensibly practical economists ignored those accepted
theories and instead relied on their blind faith in the
invisible hand of unregulated enterprise. Schlefer
explains how the politics of economics allowed them to do
so.

Financial crises and the politics of macroeconomic
adjustments / Stefanie Walter.-- New York: Cambridge
University Press, 2013.
xviii, 250p. 23cm.
ISBN : 9781107028708.
339.5 WAL 140580
To answer these questions, this book examines how
macroeconomic policy adjustments affect individual voters
in financially open economies and argues that the
anticipation of these distributional effects influences
policy makers- decisions about the timing and the type of
reform. Empirically, the book combines analyses of cross-
national survey data of voters- and firms- policy
evaluations with comparative case studies of national
policy responses to the Asian financial crisis of 1997/8
and the recent global financial crisis in Eastern Europe.
The book shows that variation in policy makers-
willingness to implement reform can be traced back to
differences in the vulnerability profiles of their
countries- electorates.

In this book, three world experts share their critical

business school of the future, and how to make it work.
They look at how the business school is changing and
focus in particular on emergent global challenges and
innovations in curricula, professional roles, pedagogy,
uses of technology and organisational delineations. Set
within the context of a wider discussion about management
as a profession, the authors provide a systematic,
historical perspective, analysing major trends in
business school models, and reviewing a wealth of current
literature, to provide an informed and unique perspective
that is firmly grounded in practical and experimental

This book introduces some theory that helps explain the
motivation for the use of new tools and techniques, and
assists understanding of their impact on the quality of
audit judgment. The book proposes a three-layered model -
an integration of contingency, socio-technical systems
and structuration theories - for a comprehensive
understanding of IT-s impact on audit. The model
advocates that the use of IT in audits is a function of
certain contingent factors that determine an optimal mix
of human skills and technological capabilities, which
would lead to changes in the nature of auditors- roles
and outputs and audit organisations- structures.

In today-s global business environment it is no longer
acceptable that a corporation does well simply by doing
good. It is expected. With increasing pressures from
stakeholders to improve the bottom line as well as to be
good corporate citizens, business leaders face tough
decisions. The book offers suggestions on how to choose
among major worthy causes and also how to measure the
amount of good achieved both for the recipients and the
companies themselves. Of course, all is not only about
challenges, there are loads of opportunities that go
along with them but itès only responsible and sustainable
leaders who would be able to spot these opportunities.
That is the future which awaits 21st century leaders.
