1 Maras, Steven
Objectivity in journalism / Steven Maras.-- United
Kingdom: Polity, 2013.
xii, 260p., 21cm.
ISBN : 9780745647357.
070.4 MAR 140438
Objectivity in journalism is a key topic for debate in
media, communication and journalism studies, and has been
the subject of intensive historical and sociological
research. In the first study of its kind, Steven Maras
surveys the different viewpoints and perspectives on
objectivity. Going beyond a denunciation or defense of
journalistic objectivity, Maras critically examines the
different scholarly and professional arguments made in
the area. Structured around key questions, the book
considers the origins and history of objectivity, its
philosophical influences, the main objections and
defenses, and questions of values, politics and ethics.
This book examines debates around objectivity as a
transnational norm, focusing on the emergence of
objectivity in the US, while broadening out discussion to
include developments around objectivity in the UK,
Australia, Asia and other regions.

Against epistemology: a metacritique / Theodor W Adorno.-
Cambridge: Polity Press, 2013.
vii, 248p. 23cm.
ISBN : 9780745665382.
121 ADO 140442
Against Epistemology is based on a manuscript Adorno
originally wrote in Oxford in 1934-37 during his first
years in exile and subsequently reworked in Frankfurt in
1955-56. The text was written as a critique of Husserl’s
phenomenology, but the critique of phenomenology is used
as the occasion for a much broader critique of
epistemology. Adorno described this as a metacritique
which blends together the analysis of Husserl’s
phenomenology as the most advanced instance of the decay
of bourgeois idealism with an immanent critique of the
tensions and contradictions internal to Husserl’s
thought. The result is a powerful text which remains one
of the most devastating critiques of Husserl’s work ever
written and which heralded many of the ideas that have
become commonplace in contemporary philosophy.

Internal game theory / Tassos Patokos.-- London:

xii, 227p. , 24cm.
ISBN : 9780415608107.

Traditional game theory requires at least two
individuals. This book extends game theory to the inner
workings of a single person. Using game theory to analyse
single individuals makes sense if one thinks of
individuals as consisting of two or more relatively
autonomous partitions that might have conflicting
motives. This book breaks new ground in combining
psychological with evolutionary game theory, making for a
highly promising way towards a better understanding of
the individual and the development of their behaviour,
along with the individual s own perceptions on it.

Meaning and argument : an introduction to logic through

United Kingdom: Wiley-Blackwell, 2013.
xviii, 445p., 23cm.
ISBN : 9781118390191.
160 LEP 140437
Meaning and Argument shifts introductory logic from the
traditional emphasis on proofs to the symbolization of
arguments. Another of its distinctive features is that it
shows how the need for expressive power and for drawing
distinctions forces formal language development. This
volume is ideal as an introduction to formal logic,
philosophical logic, and philosophy of language. At each
stage of system elaboration and development, the book
answers meta-logical questions. Why is a particular
formalism needed? What must go into such a formalism and
why? These questions engage students in a collective
inquiry which allows them to see logical studies as a
human enterprise aimed at achieving well understood goals
- clarity and good reasoning.

Saul Kripke: puzzles and mysteries / John P Burgess.--
Cambridge: Polity, 2013.
xi,219p.22cm.
ISBN : 9780745652856.
191 KRI 140449
In this book Kripke’s long-time colleague, the logician
and philosopher John P. Burgess, offers a thorough and
self-contained guide to all of Kripke’s published books
and his most important philosophical papers, old and new.
It also provides an authoritative but non-technical
account of Kripke’s influential contributions to the
study of modal logic and logical paradoxes. Although
Kripke has been anything but a system-builder, Burgess
expertly uncovers the connections between different parts
of his oeuvre. Kripke is shown grappling, often in
opposition to existing traditions, with mysteries
surrounding the nature of necessity, rule-following, and
the conscious mind, as well as with intricate and
intriguing puzzles about identity, belief and self-
reference.

xvi, 250p. , 23cm.

The book documents the powerful ways that social
inequalities frame development and explores the conflicts
that arise in the context of these inequalities. It
illustrates how people around the world make judgments
about these conditions and how they resist or change the
practices they deem unjust. By bringing together these
perspectives, the editors hope to demonstrate how
understanding social development carries with it the
possibility of change and social justice. The book
considers processes of social development. It examines
Piaget s ideas about morality and relates them to
children s thinking about social rights. An
interdisciplinary review of research from developmental,
social, and health psychology, social policy,
anthropology, and philosophy, follows this introduction.

Policy planners today are unanimous in their argument
that unless this growth is made socially inclusive, the
scourge of poverty will seriously threaten the
sustainability of holistic development or social self-
sufficiency for teeming millions of this nation.
Fortunately, government initiatives and thrust on schemes
like AADHAR wield much needed hope in this battle for
securing social and financial equality. At this hour, the
edifice of high correlation between social exclusion and
poverty should be adequately represented at the highest
policy making level and propel the right action plan in
the near to the long term. This book is an endeavour to
reveal the macro to micro views on poverty and social
exclusion issues which may help readers to think further
and act accordingly to fight against the evil.

advocates moderation in ways of working, based on the
single-most reliable difference between new faculty who
thrive and those who struggle. By following its
practical, easy-to-use rules, novice faculty can learn to
teach with the highest levels of student approval,
involvement, and comprehension, with only modest
preparation times and a greater reliance on spontaneity
and student participation. Similarly, new faculty can use
