In this book, the author offers an enlightening look into
the manifestations of China-s global ambitions: its
extensive commercial footprint, its growing military
power, its increasing cultural influence or "soft power,"
its diplomatic activity, and its new prominence in global
governance institutions. He argues that China-s global
presence is more broad than deep and that China still
lacks the influence befitting a major world power-what he
terms a "partial power." He draws on his decades of China
watching and his deep knowledge of the subject, and
exploits a wide variety of previously untapped sources,
to shed valuable light on China-s current and future
roles in world affairs.

This book explores the history of the U.S. tax mission to
Japan during the occupation following World War II. Under
General MacArthur, economist Carl S. Shoup led the
mission with the charge of framing a tax system for Japan
designed to strengthen democracy and accelerate economic
recovery. The book examines the sources, conduct, and
effects of the mission and situates the mission within
the history of international financial and fiscal reform.
The book begins by establishing the context of
progressive social investigations of taxation, including
Shoup-s earlier tax missions to France and Cuba. It then
goes on to explore the Japanese background to the Shoup
mission and the process by which American and Japanese
tax experts shaped their recommendations. The book
assesses and explains the mission-s accomplishments in
the context of the political economies of the United
States and Japan.

This book offers a range of compelling hypotheses to
account for adoption of downsizing as an accepted
business practice. The authors show that unionized
industries were actually more likely to downsize in order
to eliminate expensive union labor. In sum, downsizing
transferred income from labor to capital - from workers
to owners. This book combines an investigation of the
underlying realities and causes of workforce reduction
with an insightful analysis of the consequent shift in
the balance of power between management and labor, to
provide us with a deeper understanding of one of the
major economic shifts of recent times - one with far-
reaching implications for all American workers.

This book is an interdisciplinary response to widely
debated concerns on the state of management under the
stresses of -sound-byte- communications and of
organisational complexity. Aristotle-s principles of
wisdom are applied in contemporary management and
governance and are linked to the larger idea of human
potential and the Common Good. A Chinese philosophical
perspective on Confucian meritocracy and Wangdao
management brings a fresh perspective to an insightful
anthology of analysis and reflection relevant to
managers, researchers and teachers in management
education. The authors demonstrate an alternative to the
disciplinary silo approach to management studies and
offer a challenging alternative to current research
methods.

This book is based on the findings, issues and questions
related to an ongoing decade-old research project named
The Discontinuous Innovation Lab (DI-Lab). The research
project focuses on discontinuous innovation in more than
thirteen countries, most of which are European, and
provides useful insights into its different challenges.
It also raises several questions related to the subject,
some of which are: how do firms pick up weak signals on
emerging -- and possibly radically different --
innovation? What should firms do when these weak signals
hit their mainstream process? What are the criteria for
allocating resources to a strategic innovation project?
What actions should firms take to avoid being left out by
the "corporate immune system"? How should firms organize
projects that often break existing rules and require new
rules to be created? This book attempts to provide
answers to the above-mentioned questions by gathering
information from the research project and also from firms
that have tried exploring various ideas, models and
insights to tackle discontinuous innovation.
