Homo aestheticus : the invention of taste in the
democratic age / Luc Ferry.-- Chicago: The University of

vii, 276p. 23cm.
ISBN : 9780226244594.
111.850903 FER 135656
Can subjective, individual taste be reconciled with an
objective, universal standard? Luc Ferry argues that this
problem of aesthetic theory is fundamentally related to
the political problem of democratic individualism. He
explores the differences between subjectivity and
individuality by examining aesthetic theory as developed
first by Kant-s predecessors and then by Kant, Hegel,
Nietzsche, and proponents of the avant-garde. Ferry
discerns two "moments" of the avant-garde aesthetic: the
hyperindividualistic iconoclasm of creating something
new, and the hyperrealistic striving to achieve an
extraordinary truth. His original analysis of the growth
and decline of the modern avant-garde movement
illuminates the connections between aesthetics, ethics,
and political theory.

4 Brisolin, Viola
Power and subjectivity in the late work of Roland Barthes
and Pier Paolo Pasolini / Viola Brisolin.-- Oxford: Peter
Lang, 2011.
viii, 297p. 22cm.
ISBN : 9783034302319.
194 BRI 135646
Roland Barthes and Pier Paolo Pasolini were two of the
most eclectic cultural personalities of the past century,
as elusive as they were influential. Despite the glaring
differences between them, they also shared a number of
preoccupations, obsessions and creative approaches.
Certain themes recur insistently in the works of both
men: the pervasiveness of power and the violence inherent
in the modernising process, the possibility of freedom
and subjective autonomy, and the role of creative
practices in a society configured as a desert of
alienation. This book explores this uncharted territory
by comparing these two intellectual figures, focusing in
particular on the similarities and productive tensions
that emerge in their late works. Psychoanalysis plays a
key role in the articulation of this comparison.

"To think with Nietzsche against Nietzsche." Thus the
editors describe the strategy adopted in this volume to
soften the destructive effects of Nietzsche-s "philosophy
with a hammer" on French philosophy since the 1960s.
Frustrated by the infinite inclusiveness of
deconstructionism, the contributors to this volume seek
to renew the Enlightenment quest for rationality. Though
linked by no common dogma, these essays all argue that
the "French Nietzsche" transmitted through the
deconstructionists must be reexamined in light of the
original context in which Nietzsche worked. Each essay
questions the viability of Nietzsche-s thought in the
modern world, variously critiquing his philosophy of
history as obsessed with hierarchy, his views on religion
and art as myopic and irrational, and his stance on
science as hopelessly reactionary.

reflections on central questions in social science
discourse. This second edition directly reflects new
developments in the areas of philosophy and methodology.
Sayer has rewritten and substantially enlarged the
introduction, clarifying many of the arguments that
appear in the text. There is also a short discussion of
the importance of narrative form, particularly useful for
students concerned with the problems of writing,

University of Chicago Press, 1995.
xxix, 159p. 21cm.
ISBN : 9780226244839.
304.2 FER 135659
In The New Ecological Order, Luc Ferry offers a
penetrating critique of the ideological root of the "Deep
Ecology" movement spreading throughout the United States,
Germany, and France. But another movement has become the
refuge both of nostalgic counterrevolutionaries and of
leftist illusions. This is "deep ecology." Its followers
go beyond practical critique of human greed and waste:
they call into question the very possibility of human
coexistence with nature. Ferry launches his critique by
examining early European legal cases concerning the
status and rights of animals, including a few notorious
cases where animals were brought to trial, found guilty,
and publicly hanged. Ferry shows how deep ecology casts
aside all the gains of human autonomy since the
Enlightenment.

Virtual economies and financial crime are ever-growing,
increasingly significant facets to banking, finance and
anti-money laundering regulations on an international
scale. In this path breaking and timely book, these two
important issues are explored together for the first time
in the same place. Clare Chambers-Jones examines the
jurisprudential elements of cyber law in the context of
virtual economic crime and explains how virtual economic
crime can take place in virtual worlds. Through this
fascinating case study, the author illustrates how
virtual worlds have created a second virtual economy
which transgresses into the real, creating economic,
political and social issues. This book provides a wealth
of information on new aspects of cyber law and virtual
economics.

This important new book constitutes a serious examination
of both the positive potential, as well as the
deficiencies, of the TRIPS agreement. Intellectual
Property law (IP) - particularly in relation to
international trade regimes - is increasingly finding
itself challenged by rapid developments in the
technological and global economic landscapes. This book
examines the problems associated with this undertaking as
well as suggesting possible revisions to the TRIPS
agreement that would make it more relevant to the
environment in which today-s IP mechanisms are operating.
The overall aim is to find an adequate response to the
-IP balance dilemma-. The theme is pursued throughout
various topics, including a look at what this means in
relation to economy in a country like China, and also
considering how IP is increasingly having to reconcile
itself with human rights issues.

Regulatory Governance and Risk Management will be the

governance in the coal mining industry from a health and
safety standpoint. More specifically, it aims to
understand a puzzling phenomenon. Since the 1990s, the
approach of risk-based governance has been widely adopted
in almost all developed countries in Europe and
commonwealth countries. It, however, has diffused much
more slowly in the U.S. Using a diffusion approach and
comparisons between Australia and the U.S., this book
examines mechanisms that both drive and prevent the
diffusion of risk-based governance in the coal mining
industry.

Presents comparative domestic biographies of four
American Realist writers: Harriet Beecher Stowe, William
Dean Howells, Henry James, and Edith Wharton. Drawing
upon extensive primary sources to reconstruct the
authors- private lives, Domestic Biographies illuminates
how they lived when no one was looking. In particular
this book examines how the authors worked and wrote at
home and how their home life in turn made its way into
their novels and non-fiction.

This study focuses on the ideas of W.B. Yeats and
explores his thinking on a wide range of fundamental
subjects. Since opposites are central to Yeats- thought,
the book begins with an analysis of this topic. The
author then examines Yeats- views on religion, sex and
politics, again scrutinising the opposites at play. The
author considers Yeats- adherence to various anti-
empirical belief systems and the transformation of his
view of sex as largely a romantic concern to his later
more -earthy- perspective. Yeats- fundamentally Tory
political inclinations are examined alongside his
regrettable espousal of eugenics. In the second part of
the book Yeats- view of history and of human character in
A Vision are analysed. The author discusses Yeats- two
versions of -Sophocles- and his poems on Byzantium.

This book contrasts the portrayal of kings and kingship
in the drama of William Shakespeare (1564-1616) and the
Spanish playwright Pedro Calderon de la Barca (1600-81),
concentrating on the ways in which both dramatists use
the individual complexities of their kingly characters to
address the intellectual and moral dilemmas of the
ideological backgrounds that helped to create them.
Against the background of seventeenth-century Europe,
when religious and political reformation was leading to
reconstructions of concepts of authority and personal and
national identity, these two dramatists of early modern
England and Spain use the increasingly theatrical facades
of absolutist power to explore the internal drama of
individual psychology and the kinship of flawed humanity.

The title of this volume illustrates the significance of
margins and the instability of demarcation in the fiction
of Kazuo Ishiguro. The author approaches Ishiguro-s
writings as a corpus rather than separate units,
examining the novels to illuminate their generic,
theoretical or stylistic affiliations. The chapters
attend to seemingly peripheral elements - trivial
details, incoherent conversations, hackneyed notions,
minor characters and everyday occurrences - in order to
expose what is deliberately obscured or contained within
the explicit narrative.

Enduring negativity : representations of albinism in the
novels of Didier Destremau, Patrick Grainville and

This study focuses on fictional representations of
albinism in the work of the French writers Didier
Destremau and Patrick Grainville, and the Francophone
Guinean writer Williams Sassine. The focus on selected
novels allows for an in-depth study of each narrative and
sheds new critical light on these under-studied writers,
permitting a comparative discussion of the novels in
relation to other writing about albinism. They include a
recognition of the problematic relationship between inner
and outer reality (in both bodily terms and in relation
to notions of inclusion and exclusion), the challenging
of accepted categories and designations, and the
consequent problematisation of the relationship between
Self and Other. Bound up with these issues, of course,
are questions of identity and power.

On 8 February 1937 the 23-year-old Albert Camus gave an
inaugural lecture for a new Maison de la culture, or
community arts centre, in Algiers. Entitled -La nouvelle
culture mediterraneenne- (-The New Mediterranean
Culture-), Camus-s lecture has been interpreted in
radically different ways. These various interpretations
are based on reading the text of -The New Mediterranean
Culture- in a single context, whether that of Camus-s
life and work as a whole, of French discourses on the
Mediterranean or of colonial Algeria (and French
discourses on that country). By contrast, this study
argues that Camus-s lecture - and in principle any
historical text - needs to be seen in a multiplicity of
contexts, discursive and otherwise, if readers are to
understand properly what its author was doing in writing
it.
