This volume presents a rare occasion where scholars from
Europe, North Africa and North America share their
research programs and findings revolving around an
important theme: integration. Despite different research
foci and methodologies, there is a strong consensus that
we need to understand a psychological phenomenon in all
its complexity, involving its neural, psychological, and
social dimensions, involving perception and conception,
and decision processes, involving motivation, emotion,
and cognition -- all in complex interaction. A distinct
feature of this volume is that most research involved is
heavily built on neuropsychological evidence, while loyal
to the experimental tradition with its focus on
functional behavior in various situations and conditions
that mimic or resemble real life.

There may be no denying Chinas growing economic strength,
but its impact on the global balance of power remains
hotly contested. Political scientist Aaron L. Friedberg
argues that our nations leaders are failing to act
expeditiously enough to counter Chinas growing strength.
He explains how the United States and China define their
goals and reveals the strategies each is now employing to
achieve its ends. Friedberg demonstrates that the
ultimate aim of Chinese policymakers is to "win without
fighting," displacing the United States as the leading
power in Asia while avoiding direct confrontation. The
United States, on the other hand, sends misleading
signals about our commitments and resolve, putting us at
risk for a war that might otherwise have been avoided.

Behavioral economics / Edward Cartwright.-- London:

viii, 476p. 23cm.
(Routledge advanced texts in economics and finance, 16).
ISBN : 9780415573092.
330.019 CAR 135231
This textbook is a first major introduction to behavioral
economics, designed primarily for advanced undergraduate
students. Unquestionably the hottest new field to have
emerged in the social sciences over the past decade,
behavioral considerations are now making themselves felt
across academia and beyond and books such as Richard
Thaler and Cass Sunsteins Nudge have become blueprints
for a new way of thinking. This text will introduce all
the key concepts to a student audience. Although grounded
in game theory and experimental economics, the focus of
the text is very much on Behavior as opposed to Games.
The field is presented as a coherent subject and the text
covers a host of cutting edge developments including the
analysis of fairness, reciprocity and altruism, as well
as the brave new frontier of neuroeconomics.

ISBN : 9780415575119.

This book focuses on Milton Friedmans formulation of the
neoliberal doctrine, and analyses two aspects that were
essential to turning it into a fully-fledged paradigm:
the attribution of scientific status to positive
economics, which led to informing public policies on the
requirements of the market, and the characterisation of
economic freedom as capable of promoting political
freedom, which led to identifying free market with
democracy. It identifies in the emergence as the
mainstream in economics of the neoclassical synthesis,
which borrowed from Walras the mathematical treatment of
equilibrium but not the ethical and social framework in
which it was inscribed, a development that facilitated
the transition from the Keynesian to the neoliberal
paradigm.

Modern integrated value chains need not necessarily
exclude the smallest producers as this book aims to
explain in detail by case studies. The issue is
particularly topical in India, where modern retailing has
come to the scene only recently and the majority of whose
population are still small farmers and artisans.
Following a brief introduction to the problem, 14 case
studies from India are presented to illustrate how it is
being solved in practice. The book also discusses the
impact of organized retailing on small-scale traders, and
finally analyses the case studies for an overview, with
conclusions and learnings drawn from them. "Inclusive
Value Chains" shows by practical examples that it is
possible to link the smallest producers of fresh produce,
commodities and handicrafts profitably, to modern
integrated markets, within the country of origin as well
as abroad.

In "Beyond Mechanical Markets", Frydman and Goldberg show
how the failure to abandon this assumption hinders our
understanding of how markets work, why price swings help
allocate capital to worthy companies, and what role
government can and can-t play. The financial crisis,
Frydman and Goldberg argue, was made more likely, if not
inevitable, by contemporary economic theory, yet its core
tenets remain unchanged today. In response, the authors
show how imperfect knowledge economics, an approach they
pioneered, provides a better understanding of markets and
the financial crisis. Frydman and Goldberg deliver a
withering critique of the widely accepted view that the
boom in equity prices that ended in 2007 was a bubble
fueled by herd psychology.

publishers, 2011.
xiii, 486p. 23cm.
ISBN : 9781412842587.
340.115 BAR 135170
In this book, the author locates a fundamental defect in
widespread assumptions regarding the institution of law.
He asserts that scholarship on law is being led astray by
currently accepted beliefs about the institution, and as
a result progress in understanding law as a societal
institution will be impeded until a more accurate view of
law is accepted. This book takes on this challenge. The
book addresses two questions that are at the heart of the
institution of law. Why is law an evidently universal,
enduring institution in societies characterized by a
relatively high level of economic development and a
relatively high degree of social complexity? And why do
the concepts and doctrines of the institution of law
differ between jurisdictions (states or nations) at one
point in time and vary within a particular jurisdiction
over time?

Patents may promote innovation and catch up, and they may
foster formal technology transfer. Yet they may also
prove to be barriers for developing countries that intend
to acquire technologies through imitation and reverse
engineering. The current move to harmonize the IPR system
internationally, such as the TRIPS agreement, may thus
have unexpected consequences for developing countries.
This book explores these issues through an in depth study
of eleven countries ranging from early developers (the
USA, Nordic Countries and Japan), and Post World War 2
countries (Korea, Taiwan, Israel) to more recent emerging
economies (Argentina, Brazil, China, India and Thailand).

Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2012.
ix, 480p. 23cm.
ISBN : 9780691149134.
658.11 WAS 135173
This book examines the early decisions by entrepreneurs
that can make or break a startup and its team. Drawing on
a decade of research, the author reveals the common
pitfalls founders face and how to avoid them. He looks at
whether it is a good idea to cofound with friends or
relatives, how and when to split the equity within the
founding team, and how to recognize when a successful
founder-CEO should exit or be fired. He explains how to
anticipate, avoid, or recover from disastrous mistakes
that can splinter a founding team, strip founders of
control, and leave founders without a financial payoff
for their hard work and innovative ideas. He highlights
the need at each step to strike a careful balance between
controlling the startup and attracting the best resources
to grow it, and demonstrates why the easy short-term
choice is often the most perilous in the long term.

This book is about what we have called the "leadership
illusion", the hardwired habit of writers, researchers
and leaders themselves, when examining success or
failure, to focus on predominantly the individual and
often the context, but very rarely both. The Leadership
Illusion asserts that to make sense of leadership, we
have to understand at the same time the context in which
leaders operate because both are inextricably
interlinked. To try to understand a leader without the
context is only half the tale. This book is an attempt to
tell the whole story.More specifically, the book explores
the relevance of the informal social networks that shape
the leadership context and their role in the delivery of
personal and organisational goals.

The real facts about Jinnah are suppressed by both Indian
as well as Pakistani historians. The truth is that Jinnah
was an uncompromising enemy of foreign rule from the very
inception of his political career. He was a patriot, a
secular nationalist, and an advocate of Hindu-Muslim
unity. He fought for Indian interests in the Imperial
Legislative Assembly more vigorously than any other
Indian representative. He refused any title from the
British and struggled for united India for forty years of
his life. He resisted for long the proposal of partition
and sought fair play and safeguards for the Muslim
minority in united India and when Pakistan was won he
advocated the same for the Hindu minority. Secular and
Nationalist Jinnah questions many of the myths that have
grown round Jinnah-s role in the freedom movement and
reveals his true character to readers around the world.

These are the memoirs of Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy (8
September 1892-5 December 1963) who began his political
career as an associate of the great liberal nationalist
leader of Bengal, C.R. Das. After Das-s death in 1925 and
in the wake of the growing divide between the Hindu and
Muslim communities in general, Suhrawardy was drawn to
Muslim separatist politics. In 1947, at the height of the
communal violence he worked with Mahatma Gandhi in his
peace mission. After independence, Suhrawardy believed
that Pakistan and India should be guided by the modern
concepts of secularism and democracy. This was also the
view taken by M.A. Jinnah, founder of Pakistan. In these
memoirs, Suhrawardy describes how he fought to establish
a democratic regime in Pakistan but how the army sought
to perpetuate its rule by various means.
